Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I choose Bernardi Custom Woodworking?

Aside from producing heirloom quality work, Bernardi Custom Woodworking is guided by our mantra “give more than you take.” We build things by hand that are made to last, keeping precious building materials out of the landfill. Furthering this ethos, we donate 1% of sales every year to non profits that benefit the environment. Learn more here.

What types of projects do you take on?

We specialize in custom furniture and built in cabinetry. Things like built in bookcases, built in shelving, custom wall units, custom storage solutions, entryway built ins, mudroom built ins, and custom entertainment centers are among some of our favorites. We’ve designed and built many furniture projects as well such as nightstands, TV consoles, and home decor goods such as entryway organizers. You can see photos of past work here.

How long will my build take?

All projects are completed on a first come, first serve basis. Joe will specify up front your spot in the queue - as projects can vary we don’t give exact lead times but will give you a rough idea. We do our best to complete everything in a timely manner but this is subject to a bit of variability due to the custom nature of our work.

How does shipping work for custom furniture?

We personally deliver all pieces within the greater Boston area. If you are located outside of this area we will have them delivered through an LTL white glove service.

How do installations work for built in cabinetry projects?

The majority of the work happens in our shop, where your project is fully assembled as a complete ‘dry fit’ to confirm every detail is correct before installation. This eliminates time-consuming adjustments in your home and ensures a precise, clean fit.

After the dry fit, the piece is carefully disassembled, transported in sections, and reassembled on site. It’s then secured to the framing and scribed to your walls so it integrates seamlessly with the room.

Most installations take between 2 and 5 days, depending on size and complexity.

What types of finishes do you use?

The finish depends on how the piece will be used. For high-touch, everyday surfaces, we apply multiple coats of an eco-friendly water-based lacquer for maximum durability. Smaller or decorative pieces receive a hand-rubbed hardwax/oil finish, chosen for its natural feel, low environmental impact, and ease of maintenance.

All finishes are available in matte or satin. High-gloss finishes are only used upon request

Do you restore furniture?

We do not. We focus exclusively on custom furniture and built in cabinetry.
